Vicente Camalote, Oaxaca to June 25, 2020
To Society and the Media,
On June 9, our son Alexander Martínez Gómez, «Chander», was victim of an arbitrary execution: a state crime. Municipal police officers from Acatlán de Pérez Figueroa, Oaxaca, shot him arbitrarily and deprived him of his life when he and his friends were on their way to celebrate the birthday of one of them. He was 16 years old, he was happy, loving and a great soccer player.
We thank our family, friends, society and the media for the signs of support and solidarity. We ask you not to leave us alone, the judicial process has begun and today we need your support to a greater extent to achieve truth and justice.
On June 17, a hearing was held in which our legal advisers and the Attorney General of the State of Oaxaca provided the judge with the first results of the investigations, which allowed the preventive prision detention of the accused municipal police.
On Tuesday, June 23, at our request, we held a meeting with Dr. Rubén Vasconcelos, Attorney General of Oaxaca, and his team. We were accompanied by our legal advisers and human rights defenders. The meeting was cordial and we established a work agenda to exercise our right to actively participate in the entire legal and comprehensive care process.
At the meeting, the Attorney General was informed that, in the coming days, we will meet with a representation of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Mexico, which has expressed interest in documenting and accompanying the case in order to observe that the process is carried out under the highest human rights standards required by these types of cases related to police brutality.
We also want to report that we hadn´t any contact with the Human Rights Defender of the People of Oaxaca, despite the fact that we are informed by the media that the incumbent initiated an ex officio investigation as a result of the events. We hope that the Ombudsman guarantees our right to participate in the investigation and becomes an effective and efficient mechanism that guarantees us the truth and avoids impunity.
We have opened the justiciaparaalexander.mx, website, as a space to make visible and raise our demand for truth and justice, so that the beautiful life of our beloved Chander is known and we can establish contact with national and international media.
From this space we will establish all our communications, as well as through email firstname.lastname@example.org
Our solidarity with the family of all victims of police abuse in Mexico and in the United States. Our sons and daughters should not have died for those who have an obligation to protect us.
Virginia Gómez, Teodoro Martínez y Alexis Martínez
